Planning A Painting Budget? Leave Room For Additional Services Like Plaster, Drywall And Sheetrock Repair

Plaster, Drywall and sheetrock repair

If you are planning a painting project, you’ll want to be sure you plan the budget to include additional services like plaster, drywall and Sheetrock repair.

Many people ask if they can’t just paint over the plaster or drywall instead of repairing it first. There are plenty of people who go ahead and choose to paint over the problems, but many find out later that they wish they hadn’t done it.

Since you’re in the painting budget planning stage, be sure to plan for plaster or drywall repairs now. Here’s some information you’ll want to know from our expert Hudson painting contractors. We’ve been painting locally in NY, MA, & CT since 1980.

What Happens If You Don’t Repair Plaster & Drywall Before Painting?

Plaster lasts a very long time if it is taken care of and kept sealed. The problem is that often the previous owners ignored the maintenance. Or, issues like lumps and defects were either not repaired or were repaired improperly. Unless you want to see lumps and defects in your plaster, repair it before you paint over it.

Defects in drywall and plaster will show through the paint. If you don’t want to live with the lumps, bumps, and gouges for years to come, repair them first. Otherwise, your eyes will always be drawn to them every time you look at the walls or ceiling.

There is a point where plaster has to be replaced. If you are trying to paint over crumbling plaster, you won’t be successful. If the problem isn’t significant yet, it may be able to be repaired. Otherwise, the plaster has to be removed and redone.

Drywall & Plaster Problems To Repair:

  • Plaster Bubbling
  • Plaster Cracks
  • Flaked or Chipped Plaster
  • Water Damaged Plaster or Drywall
  • Holes in Drywall or Plaster
  • Lumps, Bumps, & Deformities
  • Sagging Drywall or Plaster Ceilings

Sagging Plaster & Drywall

Whether your ceiling is covered in plaster or drywall, the sagging problem can be repaired. Drywall can sag due to too much moisture in the home which causes it to warp. It can also sag if it is undersized. Or, it can sag due to a plumbing or roof leak. Plaster sags due to gravity that slowly pulls it away from the wood lath behind it.

Sagging drywall will need to be replaced in most cases unless you add trusses over the old ceiling and install new 5/18″ drywall. Sagging plaster can always be repaired by placing plaster buttons along the joists unless the material is too far gone.

Cracked & Flaking Plaster Repairs

Plaster cracks can be caused by a number of things including the shifting of the building’s foundation. If the crack is wider than 1/16″, have the foundation inspected by a professional. You don’t want to ignore a significant problem like this. Smaller cracks are normal. All size plaster cracks can and should be repaired.
